The ATP 500 ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam is starting today. The evening session will kick off with the second seed Daniil Medvedev, versus the still going strong, Stan Wawrinka. The Italian Mattia Bellucci will square off with the Dutch teenager Mees Rottgering.
Medvedev has not beaten Wawrinka since 2019. That's a long time. These two have faced each other twice since 2019 and Wawrinka won both matches. The last one was played in Metz back in 2022. The head to head between them is tied at two all.
Wawrinka is 39 years old at this point of his career. Stan is currently ranked at the 155th position in the world. Wawrinka has had a bad start to the 2025 season with two straight first round exits. The Australian Open and the ATP 250 Open Occitanie in Montpellier.
Daniil Medvedev is ranked at the 7th position in the world. The 28-year-old is outside the Top 5 for the first time in two years. Medvedev has only played at the Australian Open in the 2025 season. Dani went out in the second round to the young American Tien, in a gruelling five-setter. With only two official matches under his belt, we could expect Medvedev to be a bit rusty and possibly a lack of rhythm on the court too.
The Dutch teenager Rottgering is one of the most promising young players from The Netherlands. That's the reason he received a wild card to the event in Rotterdam. Mees is ranked at the 839th position in the world currently. Rottgering is a left-hander and has a two-armed backhand. The 17-year-old does not have any experience on this high level.
Matttia Bellucci is left-handed just as Rottgering is. It’s quite unusual to have a match where two of them face each other. Bellucci is ranked at the 92nd spot in the world currently. The 23-year-old did not qualify for the Australian Open. Last week Bellucci played at the ATP 250 Open Occitanie in Montpellier. Bellucci lost in the second round to Kovacevic.
