Spain was only briefly mentioned before this summer's European Championship. "Good, but not quite ready" was the most common phrase. But here they are, in the final – as favorites, after playing the best football of the tournament. There’s no reason to change anything, and it looks like Alvaro Morata will be able to play, despite being slide-tackled by a steward in the last game.
England, the pre-tournament favorite, has had to fight their way through. They haven’t had anything handed to them and haven’t found their best form. But maybe they’ve saved the best for last? Let's not forget how good they have been over the past two to three years. It seems a bit harsh to write off the team just because they haven’t played sparkling football in recent weeks. There will be no surprises here either – Gareth Southgate will set up his team as usual. The only question is who will take the left-back spot: Kieran Trippier or the now-fit Luke Shaw.
The bookmakers have clearly favored Spain and predict a low-scoring affair. However, I believe Gareth Southgate is smart enough to understand that they can’t just sit back – that would be overwhelming. He must unleash Saka, Kane, Bellingham, and Foden. Regardless of the match, venue, or opponent, if you get odds over 3.00 on Harry Kane, you take it. We have enough evidence that he is a tremendously sharp finisher.
It seems quite reasonable to expect VAR to come into play as well. No one will want to make a mistake with all eyes on this Final.
Rodri, Spain’s midfield anchor, is used to battling English players for his club, Man City. He can sometimes get a bit too fired up in big matches but is always very, very good.
Argentina, who swept the World Cup in Qatar, is now in yet another major final, and as usual, there’s a lot of talk about Leo Messi. But there is plenty of quality elsewhere too. I believe Julian Alvarez could steal the headlines. He operates from the left wing and will be up against a "stand-in" (Colombia has Daniel Munoz suspended).
Alexis Mac Allister rarely finds himself in the spotlight but always does a great job. An underrated passer, he is crucial for balance and doesn’t shy away from taking a cynical yellow card in these big matches.
I can’t overlook the assist odds on Jhon Arias. I’ve seen him a lot with Fluminense. He’s skilled in tight spaces, a smart passer, and sooner or later will shine in the national team jersey as well.
