With two simultaneously 1000 masters event in the same week Canada is in the centre of attention in the world of tennis. The gents are playing in Montreal and the Ladies in Toronto. We will be focusing on Montreal.
Yesterday we hit all of our three predictions. Navone did not win a set versus Fritz. Kokkinakis defeated Monfils and Cobolli took a set from Auger-Aliassime (he won the match). We have three new predictions for tonight. Hurkacz vs Kokkinakis, Korda vs Fritz and Rinderknech vs Cobolli.
The Italian Flavio Cobolli is having the best time on the ATP Tour currently. he reached his maiden final on the tour in Washington last week (he lost to Korda) and he played very well yesterday when he got the better of Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Cobolli will keep climbing up the rankings with the level of play he is showcasing to the world at the moment. The 22 year old is ranked at the 33rd position and he will face the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the second round. Arthur is ranked at the 65th spot in the world and he has won 13 out of the 27 matches he has played on tour in 2024. He is in the main draw after he qualified and yesterday he defeated his compatriot, Adrien Mannarino, in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-4). These two players are one all in the head two heads. This is the first matchup on an outdoor hard court.
Kokkinakis has been looking healthier and healthier lately and we would love if it keeps going that way for the talented Australian. Thanasi got the better off the veteran Gael Monfils yesterday and won the match in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). He reached the third round in Washington last week but lost to Sebastian Korda. Hurkacz haven’t played a match since he retired in the second round at Wimbledon (vs Arthur Fils) due to an injury. So Herbert is most likely not sure about the level he is at right now. This will be a good test for the 6th ranked player in the world. These two players have played each other on three occasions on the tour. All of them during the 2023 season. Hurkacz won all three matches and all of them were played on hard court. court.
Korda won the biggest title in his career last week at the ATP 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open In Washington. He defeated Flavio Cobolli in the final. Korda is now back in the top 20 in the rankings and has gained some really nice momentum ahead of the US Open. Korda squared off with the Canadian Pospisil yesterday, but Pospisil had to retire just after three games in the opening set. Taylor Fritz got the better of Mariano Navone yesterday in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). Fritz just played the Olympics in Paris where he lost to Lorewnzo Musetti in the third round. Fritz, whois ranked at the 13th spot in the world, is up two to nothing in the head two heads. Both matches were on clay.
