Two out of the three groups in the men’s basketball event will bedecided today. Canada are the frontrunners in the group of death and they face Spain who could leapfrog them. In group B France and Germany will play each other for the first position in the group.
Canada has won two out of two games in Group A and they are looking sharp and determined out there on the court. Team Canada is led by the excellent and oversized pointguard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He finished top 3 in the MVP of the NBA voting the past season. Canada plays true team basketball, they play physical and hard. Canada is not afraid of any team in the Olympics. The roster is stacked with names like Dillon Brooks, Dwight Powell, Jamal Murray, Luguentz Dort, Andrew Nembhard and RJ Barrett to name a couple of them. Team Canada is coached by the Spaniard Jordi Fernandez, the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. In the first game of the tournament Canada got the better of Greece (86-79) and in their second match they defeated Australia (93-83). Spain has won one and lost one game so far at the Olympics. The team is led by the Hernangomez brothers, Lorenzo Brown, Santi Aldana and the two veterans Sergio Llull and Ruby Fernandez. The latter is playing his six straight Olympic games. Unbelievable achievement by him. Spain’s biggest strength is their system and that the players know their roles created by the coach, Sergio Scariolo. In the first match of the Olympics Spain lost to Australia (92-80). Spain defeated Greece in the second match (84-77). A win today could make Spain the number one team in the group of death.
There are four teams in the men’s olympic tournament that has won 2 out of 2 matches. USA, Canada, Germany and France. Germany and France are facing each other tonight in Paris. This match is about who will be the top dog in the group. The two other teams in group B are Japan and Brazil. They will play for the third position in the group. Germany are the current and reigning World Champions. The Wagner Brothers and the point guard Dennis Schroeder are leading the team. Germany are a very well coached and disciplined team. So far at the Olympics in Paris they have defeated Japan (97-77) and Brazil (86-73). France is led by the Twin Towers of Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert. Evan Fournier leads the backcourt. They haven't been at their best so far and the offence looks pretty stale at times. The defence is very good most of the time. If France wants to play for the medals in Paris their offence must improve. France is still a good team but with some tweaks it could get even better. So far they have defeated Brazil (78-66) and Japan in overtime (94-90). These two teams played a friendly game before the Olympics when Fournier and Schroeder got in to a big brawl. We’ll see tonight if there still is some bad blood between them.
