Last summer Carlos Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal, on his way to his first Wimbledon title ever. Now they meet again in the semi final at Wimbledon. Will Medvedev get his revenge or will Alcaraz play his second straight final at the all England lawn tennis club?
Carlos is up 4-2 in the head two heads. Four of their six matches were played in 2023. Alcaraz defeated Medvedev in straight sets in the semi final last year. after that match they played three more matches, we’ll get back to them shortly. The semi final last year was their second ever match on grass and at SW 19. The first time these two played each other at all was also at Wimbledon back in 2021, and Medvedev won it in straight sets. The played each other in the semi’s at the US Open last season and Medvedev won that match in four sets. In the 2024 season they played once and that was in the final at Indian Wells and Carlos won it in straight sets. That was the second straight final between them at Indian Wells. Carlos won the one in 2023 straight sets too. They also faced off at the ATP finals late last year in the round robin, Alcaraz won in straight sets.
The world number five and one time Grand Slam Champion, opened his campaign at SW19 by defeating Kovacevic in straight sets. He followed up that win with another win against Muller in the second round (four sets). In the Round of 32 he got the better of Struff, also in four sets. In the fourth round he defeated Dimitrov after the Bulgarian gave up late in the first set due to injury. In the quarter final Medvedev got the better of the World number one, Jannik Sinner, in five sets. In yesterday’s pre match interview he told the reporters that he hopefully learned the lessons from last year's loss against Carlos at Wimbledon.
The world number 3 and three time Grand Slam Champion opened up his title defence by winning the two first matches in straight sets. First he got the better of the Estonian qualifier Lajal and in the second one he won against Vukic from Australia. In the round of 32 he ran into Tiafoe and came back from two sets to one down and won it in five sets in the end. In the fourth round Alcazar defeated the Frenchman Humpert in four sets. He lost the first set to Tommy Paul in the quarter final, but came back to win it in four sets. After his quarter final win against Paul. Carlos said: “Medvedev is a really great player and i have to play my best to beat him”.
