We have two French players in the final of the ATP 500 Japan Open in Tokyo. Ugo Humbert from the city of Metz will square off with Arthur Fils from the town of Bondoufle. Fils could win his second title of the year and Humbert could win his third at the Japan Open in Tokyo. Humbert has never lost to Fils on the ATP tour.
Arthur Fils have been involved in some close and entertaining matches at the Japan Open in Tokyo this week and won them in the end. That says something about him having the needed “luck” in the most crucial and pivotal moments of a match. At least so far this week. In the semifinal he defeated Holger Rune in two close tie break sets. The tie breaks ended 10-8 and 12-10. In the quarter final Arthur defeated the defending Japan Open champion, Ben Shelton, in three sets (7-5, 6-7, 7-6). Fils was down a set to Berrettini in the second round but The Italian had to retire the match at the start of the second set.
In the opening round Fils took out the firsts seed of the event, Taylor Fritz in three sets. It has been an intense Japan Open in Tokyo for Arthur Fils. without a doubt. The 20 year old is ranked at the 24 position in the world and he has won 31 and lost 23 matches in the tour in 2024. The title he won this season was at the ATP 500 in Hamburg, he defeated Zverev in the final.
Ugo Humbert had his best month ever on the ATP tour back in February earlier this year. Ugo won two titles that month, the ATP 500 in Dubai and the ATP 250 in Marseille. Humbert now has a great chance to win his second ATP 500 title of the year. Humbert and Fils have played each other three times in the ATP tour and the 26 year old Humbert is up three to nothing. Two of the matches were played in 2024. Montreal on hard court and on the grass at Hertogenbosch. They also faced off in Cincinnati last season. Humbert has only lost one set to Fils in these three matches.
So far at the Japan Open in Beijing Humbert has only lost one set and it was in the semifinal against Tomas Machac (6-3, 2-6, 6-3). In the first two rounds of the Japan Open Ugo got the better of Moshizuki and Nakashima in straight sets. In the QF Jack Draper retired the match when he was a set dorn to Humbert. Ugo is ranked at the 19th position in the world and he has won 32 and lost 20 matches.
