We are in the QFs of the ATP 250 ASB Classic in Auckland. It’s heating up because the first Slam of the year, The Australian Open, begins in a couple of days. Jakub Mensik will square off with Borges. Zizou Bergs will face Roberto Carballes Baena.
Carballes Baena had a bad start to the 2025 season with a first-round exit in Hong Kong last week. Roberto lost to Diallo in three sets. Roberto Carballes Baena has beaten Altmeier in three sets and Cerundolo in two sets. With his early exit in Hong Kong, he has had plenty of time to adapt to the conditions in Auckland. Roberto is ranked at the 59th position in the world. Carballes Baena is 31 years old.
This is the first time Zizou and Roberto will face each other on the ATP Tour. Bergs qualified for the event and started out the ATP 250 ASB Classic with a win versus Comesana in three sets. In the second round, Bergs got the better of Becroft in two sets. The 25-year-old from Belgium is ranked at the 66th spot. Zizou played in Hong Kong last week, he got to the second round.
Jakub Mensik defeated Ben Shelton, the top seed in Auckland, as the underdog in the second round. The win means that Mensik is 4-1 so far in the 2025 season. He reached the QF in Brisbane last week too. The 19-year-old Czech has a bright future ahead of him. Mensik is currently ranked at the 49th position in the world. Jakub took care of Carreno Busta in the opening round of the ATP 250 ASB Classic.
Borges and Mensik have faced each other once before on the ATP Tour. It was at the US Open a couple of months ago. Borges won the match in five sets in the round of 32. Nuno is 27 years old and currently ranked at the 36th spot in the world. Borges has beaten Navone and Darderi so far in Auckland. Nuno won both of the matches in three sets.
