It’s the last day of play in the Ilie Nastase Group before the semis starts at the ATP Tour Finals. The American Taylor Fritz needs to beat Alex De Minaur to get into the semis. The Australian Alex De Minaur has lost both his matches so far in Turin.
The 27 year old Fritz won his first match at the ATP Tour Finals against Medvedev and lost his second to Sinner. The World Number five has 1-1 record and a win versus De Minaur would get him through to the promised land. Unless Medvedev defeats Sinner, if he does we have three players with a 2-1 record. In that case the ramifications change and things will be a bit complicated
Alex De Minaur is most likely out of the ATP Tour Finals, even if he wins this match against Fritz. De Minaur has a very small way into the semis, though. That’s if Jannik Sinner defeats Daniil Medvedev with a big margin. It’s obviously not in De MInaur’s own hands at this point. So let's put the speculations aside for now.
The 25 year old World Number 9 from Sydney has faces Fritz on eight occasions in their respective careers and De Minaur is up 5-3. Both players turned pro in 2015. De Minaur won the first three matches between them played in 2018 and 19. Then Taylor Fritz won the next three matches they played in 2021 and 22. De Minaur has won the two last matches. One in the ATP 1000 Canada Masters last season and one at the United Cup in Australia at the start of this season. Two of their first three matches were played on indoor hardcourt.
Taylor Fritz made his first ever Grand Slam final this season. He lost the final to Sinner at the US Open. Still a milestone in Taylor’s career. Fritz has won two titles during the year on the tour. The ATP 250 Delray Beach and the ATP 250 Eastbourne Open. Alex De Minaur has won two titles this season too. The ATP 500 Acapulco and the ATP 250 Hertogenbosch.
