The Briton Jack Draper will square off with the Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the second semifinal at the ATP 1000 Mutua Madrid Open. These two players have been been playing great on the ATP tour for a while now. Starting next week Draper will be in the top five of the rankings. Musetti will be inside the top ten.
Lorenzo and Jack have faced each other on three occasions so far in their young careers. Draper has won all three of the matches. The first match between them was played at the next gen finals in 2022. Lorenzo and Jack squared off in Sofia in 2023 and in Vienna last season. All encounters have been indoors and Draper hasn't lost a set yet on the ATP tour to Musetti.
So with the win against Arnaldi in the QF yesterday Draper has secured a top five spot in the ATP rankings starting monday next week. A milestone for the 23 year old Draper. A year ago Jack was ranked at number 40. He defeated Arnaldi, 6-4, 6-0 in the QF. It was nothing but a demolition. Draper took care of Tommy Paul in the round of 16 (2-0). Berrettini in the round of 32 and Griekspoor in the round of 64.
Draper, currently ranked at the 6th spot in the world, won his first ever ATP 1000 Masters title earlier in the season. It was at Indian Wells (def Rune in the final). The left handed Jack has won 18 and only lost four matches so far this year on the ATP tour. Draper reached the final at the ATP 500 Doha but lost to Rublev. Madrid is only his sixth entry of the year.
Last summer Musetti reached the semis at Wimbledon after he had been struggling on the tour for the major part of the 2024 season. The 23 year old is currently ranked at the 11th position in the world and will be inside the top ten from Monday. Musetti was at number 30 a year ago. Lorenzo started out his campaign in Madrid by getting the better of Etcheverry (2-0) in the round of 64, Tsitsipas in the round of 32 (2-0), De Minaur in the round of 16 (2-0), Diallo in the QF (2-0). Musetti has been playing at a very high level of clay tennis in Madrid over the last week.
Musetti has a match record of 16 and five lost matches in the 2025 season. Madrid is His seventh entry of the season. The highlight of the year for Musetti is the final berth At the ATP 1000 Rolex Masters in Monte Carlo (lost to Alcaraz in three sets). Lorenzo also has two QF berths to his name in 2025. At Hong Kong and in Buenos Aires.
