The Italian Musetti and The Greek Tsitsipas have faced each other on six occasions on the ATP Tour. Today will be the 7th encounter between them at the Mutua Madrid Open. It was a one sided rivalry until Musetti was beat Tsitsipas for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago.
The previous match between these two players was the QF at the ATP 1000 Rolex Masters in Monte Carlo. Musetti won the match in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was his first ever victory versus Tsitsipas after losing the first five matches against him. The first match they squared off at was in Acapulco (hard court) and the second in Lyon (both 2021). Stefanos won a tough five setter at Roland Garros in 2022. They played each other twice in 2023 in Barcelona and Rome. Five out of their six matches have been on clay. Both players use the one armed backhand.
Lorenzo took care of Etcheverry in his first match at the Mutua Madrid Open. It took Musetti one hour and 48 minutes to close the deal. The match ended 7-6 (3), 6-2. Lorenzo outplayed his opponent on the second serve. Musetti won 71% of the points on his second serve. Compared to 38% for Etcheverry. Musetti only converted three out of 13 breakpoints and he had 128 winners to his 23 unforced errors. Lorenzo was effective at the net with nine won net points out of nine. In total he won 55% of the points in the match.
The 26 year old Greek got the better of Struff in three sets in the round of 64. He won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The match was over after one hour and 58 minutes. It was a close match and Tsitsipas was more composed on the important key points in the match. Tsitsipas had 16 winners to his 9 unforced errors and he converted four out of eight breakpoints. In total Tsitsipas won 51% of the points in the match.
The Athens native has won one title this season and it was at the ATP 500 in Dubai. Stefanos defeated Auger-Aliassime in the final. Tsitsipas got to the QF at Rotterdam, Monte Carlo and Barcelona. His current ranking on the ATP tour is at number 18. Tsitsipas has won 12 titles in his career so far and his match record this season is at 16 wins and eight lost matches.
Musetti is currently ranked at the 11th position in the world of tennis. Which is his highest ever on the ATP tour. The 23 year old has won 13 and lost five matches in the 2025 season. Musetti has not played since the ATP 1000 Rolex Masters in Monte Carlo, where he got to the final but lost it to Alcaraz in three sets. That is his best result for the season. Lorenzo reached the QF in Hong Kong and Buenos Aires.
