The Italian Musetti will play his first ever ATP 1000 Masters final after beating De Minaur in the semis. Lorenzo will square off with Alcaraz for the 5th time in the final. Carlos has never won the Rolex Masters title in Monte Carlo.
Carlos had a tough match against his Spanish compatriot Davidovich Fokina in the semifinal. Alcaraz won the well-played match in straight sets 7-6 (2), 6-4. The match was over after two hours and 15 minutes. Carlos has now given himself the possibility to win his first ever Masters title in Monte Carlo.
The key behind his win versus Davidovich Fokina was the second serve. Alejandro won 34% of the points on his second serve to 64% for Alcaraz. Carlos only converted three out of 19 breakpoints. He saved five out of the seven he faced on his own serve. The 21-year-old from Murcia won seven out of eight points at the net. This is his first Masters final in the last 13 months (Indian Wells).
The 23-year-old Lorenzo lost the first set to De Minaur and he was not in it and he felt tight on the court. He won the second set and was about out to serve for the match at 5-4 in the decisive set. De Minaur broke back and Musetti had to make a big effort once again and won the match 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) after two hours and 39 minutes. Lorenzo won five out of the last six points in the tie breaker.
De Minaur came out determined and Musetti had to claw his way back into the match. So he did and he did it well. Musetti was very composed in the last decisive moments of the third set. Musetti was to some extent outshined by De Minaur statistically, but Lorenzo had the stronger head when it mattered the most.
Carlos and Lorenzo have faced each other on four occasions on the ATP tour. The Spaniard is up three to one at this point. The first match between them was the final in Hamburg back in 2022. Musetti won the title and the match in three sets. They squared off twice in 2023. At Roland Garros and in Beijing. Carlos won both of the encounters. The prior match between them was last season in Miami and Carlos won it. Since the win in Hamburg, Musetti has not been able to win a set versus Alcaraz.
Lorenzo started out his campaign at the ATP 1000 Rolex Masters by beating Bu and Lehecka in three sets. Then he took out Berrettini in straight sets. Musetti defeated Tsitsipas in the QF for the first time ever in his career. Alcaraz started his week by beating Cerundolo (2-1). Then he got the better of Altmeier (2-0). Carlos had a hard fought win in the QF versus Fils (2-1).
Alcaraz has won 19 and lost four matches on the tour in 2025. He has won one title, the ATP 500 Rotterdam. The world number 13 Musetti has a record of 12 wins and four lost games so far in 2025. Over the last three matches between them Carlos has been able to exploit the one-armed backhand of Musetti. If history should repeat itself Musetti is in for a rough day at the office by the Mediterranean.
