The defending champion at the ATP 1000 Rolex Masters in Monte Carlo, Stefanos Tsitsipas will have his work cut out for him today. The Greek will face the Italian clay specialist Lorenzo Musetti in the last QF of the day. This will be the 6th encounter between them and the results have been one sided.
Stefanos has played Lorenzo on five occasions and won every single one of them. These two have squared off on the surface clay four times and Tsitsipas has won them all. Something of a tough pill to swallow for Musetti. They played twice in 2023 in Rome and Barcelona. They played at Roland Garros in 2022, Lyon and Acapulco in 2021. Tsitsipas has won two of the matches in straight sets. Both players are using the one armed backhand.
Lorenzo squared off with his compatriot Matteo Berrettini in his previous match at the ATP 1000 Rolex Masters in Monte Carlo. Musetti won the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Lorenzo served really well in the match and that was one of the decisive factors to the outcome of the match. Musetti won 73% of the points on his first serve and a massive 83% on his second serve. He converted three out of the ten breakpoints Lorenzo had and did not allow a single breakpoint against him. He won 67 points to Matteo’s 51. Musetti took care of Lehecka (2-1) in the round of 32 and Bu (2-1) in his opening match of the event.
The 23 year old Musetti is ranked at the 16th spot in the world and he had his big breakthrough on the tour last season with a semi berth at Wimbledon. Lorenzo started the season with a QF berth in Hong Kong. He went out in the round of 32 at the Australian Open to Shelton. Musetti then reached the QF in Buenos Aires. The round of 32 at Indian Wells and the round of 16 at the ATP 1000 Miami Masters. He has won ten and lost four matches on the tour in the 2025 season.
The defending champion had an excellent display of clay court tennis in his round of 16 match versus Borges. Tsitsipas won the match comfortably, 6-1, 6-1. Stefanos did outserve his opponent. The Greek won 72% of the points on his first serve and 50% on his second serve. Tsitsipas converted six out of the seven breakpoints he had in the match. Stefanos won 62 points to 40 for Nuno. Tsitsipas took care of Jordan Thompson in three sets in his opening match at the event.
Tsitsipas has won 13 and lost six matches in the 2025 season. Stefanos is 26 years of age and currently ranked at the 8th position in the world. He had a rough start to the season with a first round exit in Melbourne. He reached the QF in Rotterdam. He had a first round exit in Doha and went on to win the title in Dubai. Tsitsipas got to the round of 16 at Indian Wells and the round of 32 in Miami.
