All of the three top seeds are qualified for the semis at the ATP 500 China Open in Beijing. Sinner, Alcaraz, and Medvedev are expectedly there. The player that got there unexpectedly is Chinese and his name is Yunchaokete Bu. Bu will face Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz will square off with Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.
Both Medvedev and Alcaraz have been looking good at the China Open in Beijing. Daniil is still without a title this year, and he would love to change that in Beijing. He has a tough challenge ahead of him in the shape of Carlos Alcaraz. Medvedev is down to Carlos in the head-to-head. It’s 5-2 to Carlos, and the Spaniard has won the last three matches between the two of them. The 28-year-old Medvedev is ranked 5th in the world and has won 39 and lost 16 matches in 2024. Daniil has not lost a set yet in Beijing, having beaten Gael Monfils, Adrian Mannarino, and Flavio Cobolli in the first three rounds.
The last three matches between Alcaraz and Medvedev have been the Wimbledon semifinal this summer, the Indian Wells final in the spring, and the ATP Finals in Turin late in 2023. The last time Carlos lost to Medvedev was at the US Open semis in 2023. Alcaraz is ranked third in the world, and the 21-year-old has won 43 and lost 9 matches on the ATP Tour in 2024. Impressive. He has won the French Open and Wimbledon this season. So far, at the China Open in Beijing, he has defeated Mpetshi Perricard, Griekspoor, and Khachanov, all in straight sets.
Bu received a wild card from the organizers after he reached the semifinal last week at the ATP 250 Chengdu Open. The 22-year-old from Xinjiang, China, is playing his best tennis ever on the ATP Tour. Yunchaokete Bu defeated his compatriot Juncheng Shang in the first round in three sets. He took out the 6th seed Musetti in two sets in the round of 16, and he won against Rublev in the QF in straight sets. He is ranked just inside the Top 100 at the 96th spot in the world, and he will make a leap come the next ranking. He has won seven of the ten matches he has played on the ATP Tour in 2024. This will be the first time Bu faces Sinner on the ATP Tour.
The next events on the tour will be a huge test for Sinner’s composure and mental strength. He is facing a one-year suspension, minimum, if WADA finds him guilty in the doping case that he was freed from once before. Whatever happens, Sinner is out to finish off the season in the best way possible. Bu has the opportunity to make a huge upset in this match if Sinner is not 100% mentally there. Sinner has defeated Nicolas Jarry and Roman Safiullin in the first two rounds, both matches going to three sets. Jannik beat Jiri Lehecka in the QF in straight sets. Sinner has won 58 and lost only 5 matches on the tour in 2024. He is the world number one for a good reason.
