Liverpool welcome Leverkusen to Anfield in both teams fourth game of this Champions League campaign. The Reds are one of two teams this season with a perfect start to the Champions League along with Aston Villa and look to continue their great form. Meanwhile Leverkusen sit sixth and hope to remain unbeaten as a defeat today could see them drop out of the top eight.
Liverpool´s newly appointed manager Arne Slot has led the Reds to an impressive unbeaten run of 11 games after a loss to Nottingham Forrest early in the season. Currently sitting at the top of the Premier League with 25 points after ten games. They had a narrow 2-1 win over Brighton last weekend where Liverpool to took a page out of Leverkusen’s book, scoring two second half goals courtesy of Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah to edge out a victory. To start their Champions League campaign Liverpool defeated AC Milan, Bologna and RB Leipzig to establish themselves as early UCL contenders as they now seek a fourth straight European victory repeating their start to the 2021-22 season.
Leverkusen are looking competitive in the Champions League with wins over Feyenoord and AC Milan along with a draw against Brest putting them at sixth. Despite a frustrating 0-0 draw with Stuttgart in their last game Leverkusen remain undefeated on the road this season with four wins and three draws across all competitions. Leverkusen were crowned Bundesliga champions and they won the DFB-Pokal last season after going undefeated in both competitions but they just lost out on the treble to Atalanta in Europa League final. A still impressive but worse start this season has seen Leverkusen being plagued by draws in the Bundesliga with four wins, four draws and one loss after nine games.
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is set to return after a recent arm injury but Alisson Becker, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota are still sidelined. Meanwhile Mohamed Salah could score in his sixth straight home UCL game matching an English club record. Leverkusen’s Nordi Mukiele is out with a thigh injury joining Amine Adli and Jeanuel Belocian on the injury list. Jonas Hofmann is expected to start in Mukiele's absence while Florian Wirtz could make history by scoring in his first three UCL away games.
