Monaco will travel to Istanbul to face Fenerbahce in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague. This is the blockbuster clash of the day. Monaco are fourth in the standings while Fenerbahce sit at the second spot.
The legendary Greek point guard, Spanolis, is the new head coach of Monaco since November 24th. Sasha Obradovic got fired after five years with the ball club. Monaco have a record of 14 wins and 9 losses so far in the Euroleague. They sit at the 4th position in the table. Monaco have won two and lost one game since Spanolis took over. Last week they took care of Alba Berlin, 100-80. Before that they defeated Panathinaikos (91-88 ) and lost to Olympiacos (80-89).
Monaco just lost to Paris in the French domestic league (104-111). That was a tough loss since they were up by 19 points at one point in the second half. This is not the time or place to make some sort of evaluation about what Spanolis has achieved so far as the new head coach in Monaco. In all fairness Vassilis needs more time before he is judged. Monaco will miss the scoring forward Alpha Diallo for a couple of weeks due to injury.
Fenerbahce had lost two straight games in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague to Milano and Baskonia before they beat Madrid last week. They took care of Real Madrid, 82-70, away from home. A big win for Head Coach Sarunas Jasikevicius and his squad. Fenerbachce currently at the second spot in the standings with a record of ten wins and four losses. Only Paris Basketball are ahead of Fener in the table. In the domestic Turkish league Fenerbahce have won eight games and only lost one.
Fenerbahce got the better of Monaco in the playoffs of last year's edition of the Euroleague. Monaco would love to avenge Fenerbahce tonight because of that. Fener will try to play as physically as the refs allow them to be. Monaco can be a bit sensitive to physical play at times. Look out for Nigel Hayes-Davis. He has been in fire for Fenerbahce lately.
