The hosts Augsburg have been mixing it up at the start of the Bundesliga season. They have won one, lost one, and drawn one in their first three matches. Last weekend they defeated St Pauli at home 3-1. Wolf, Tietz, and Kabadayi scored the goals for Augsburg. They lost to Heidenheim away, 0-4, in the second game and drew with Werder Bremen (2-2) on the opening day of the Bundesliga. They have scored five goals in three matches with five different goalscorers. It is the second season that the Danish coach, JC Thorup, is in charge of the club. Currently, Augsburg is placed at the 11th position in the early stages of the Bundesliga table.
Mainz's start to the new season has not been excellent at all. They are placed at the 15th spot in the league table and have only collected two points in their first three matches: two draws and one loss. Luckily for Mainz, they have three clubs behind them in the table. If they keep it that way, they will not be relegated at the end of the season. This is a game they do not want to lose, at least. In their last fixture, Mainz lost to Werder Bremen (1-2). Mainz played 11 vs 10 in the last 30 minutes of that match since Friedl was sent off for Bremen. They drew their first two fixtures of the new Bundesliga season against Union Berlin (1-1) and Stuttgart (3-3). Six conceded goals in three matches is not good enough for a team looking to avoid relegation. Bo Henriksen is the manager of Mainz, and their defense must really improve. Henriksen is from Denmark, just as Thorup is.
Augsburg will miss Reece Oxford and Robert Gummy in tonight’s game. There are question marks regarding Frank Onyeka and Dimitrios Giannoulis. The visitors will only miss one player at the WWK Arena in Augsburg tonight, and that is Andreas Hanche-Olsen.
