One of Learner Tien from the USA or Joao Fonseca from Brazil will be the Champion of the ATP Next Gen Finals in Jeddah of Saudi Arabia. These two faced each other in the Round Robin stage of the ATP Next Gen Finals, and Fonseca won that battle.
The 18-year-old Brazilian has not lost a match yet in the Next Gen Finals. He won all of his matches in the Round Robin: Learner Tien, Arthur Fils, and Jakub Mensik. Fonseca showcased a minor destruction against the Frenchman Luca Van Assche in the semi-final yesterday. Fonseca won easily in three straight sets.
Joao Fonseca is currently ranked at the 145th spot in the world. Fonseca started the year at the 730th position in the world. Rio de Janeiro is the hometown of Fonseca. He was the lowest-ranked player coming into the Next Gen Finals and seeded at the 8th spot. Joao has won one title on the Challenger tour this season.
The 19-year-old American from California won two of his matches in the Round Robin phase. Tien took out Mensik and Fils, but lost to Fonseca. Learner squared off with his best friend Alex Michelsen in the semi-final yesterday and won the match as the underdog. Learner is a left-hander and currently ranked at the 122nd position in the world of tennis. Tien came into the ATP Next Gen Finals as the 5th seed.
Learner Tien has a great backhand shot, which is his best weapon on the court. Tien started the season at the 453rd spot in the rankings. Learner Tien has won a couple of smaller ITF Challenger titles during 2024. Tien came into the Next Gen Finals with 15 wins in his prior 19 matches on the Challenger tour.
