The US and Croatia will square off in the United Cup in Perth of Western Australia. USA defeated Canada in their opening fixture. Croatia lost to Canada in their first match of the event. If Croatia loses this one they are out of the United Cup.
Borna Coric took care of Felix Auger-Aliassime in his first match of the United Cup. Coric won the match in three sets after being down a set and a break in the second. That did not help Croatia though since they lost to Canada. Coric is currently ranked at the 90th spot in the world. The 29 year old from the Croatian Capital, Zagreb, was ranked at the 12th spot six years ago. Last season was spoiled due to injuries for Coric. He won 12 and lost 19 matches on the tour last season.
Taylor Fritz has faced Coric on four occasions and lost all of the matches between them. These four matches were played from 2016 to 2020. So they haven’t played in more than four years. Taylor Fritz, the world number four lost to Auger-Aliassime in his first match of the United Cup. USA won the match against Canada and if they win this one they will win the group.
Donna Vekic lost to Leylah Fernandez in straight sets in her first match of the United Cup. The 28-year-old Vekic is ranked at the 19th spot in the world. Donna was close to stopping playing tennis because of injuries. She kept believing in herself, kept fighting on, and reached the finals at Wimbledon and the Olympics in 2024.
The 20-year-old Gauff is ranked at the third position in the world behind Sabalenka and Swaitek. Gauff defeated Leylah Fernandez in straight sets in her opening match at the United Cup. Coco played well in that match. She was composed, calm, and hitting the ball with great accuracy.
