The round of 16 will be completed today at the IEB+ Argentina Open in Buenos Aires. Ekaterina Makarova will square off with the sixth seed, Julia Riera. The 8th seed Laura Pigossi will face Jasmin Ortenzi.
Makarova is just seeded outside the top 200 at the 202nd position. Her highest ranking ever was at the 158th spot at the start of 2024. Makarova has won 33 and lost 38 matches across all tours in 2024. The 28 year old Russian defeated Bulgaru in the round of 32 in straight sets. Makarova played in the WTA 125 in Charleston last week and went out on the second round.
Julia Riera from Argentina is out too far at the event. Riera got the better of Nina Stojanovic in the first round in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). Stojanovic just won the WTA 125 LP Open last week. A good win for Riera. The 22 year oldJulia is ranked at the 112th spot in the world. She has won 35 and lost 24 matches across all tours in 2024. Riera has won three out of her last five matches on the WTA tour.
The 30 year old Brazilian Laura Pigossi is ranked at the 129th spot in the world right now. Pigossi took care of Fossa Huergo in three sets in the round of 32. Pigossi has won 35 and lost 30 matches across all tours this season. Laura Pigossi has only won two out of her last six matches on the tour. Pigossi and Ortenzi played each other two weeks ago at the Cali Open and Ortenzi won the match in two sets.
Jasmin Ortenzi is from Argentina and she got a wild card to the event. In the first round Jasmin got the better of another fellow wild card recipient, Giovannini, in two sets. The 23 year old is currently ranked at the 275th position in the world. Ortenzi reached the QF at the Cali Open and lost in the first round at the Bolivia Open.
