Three of of the six top seeded players at the IEB + Argentina Open will be in action today in Buenos Aires. It's the quarter final day. Julia Riera will face Maria Lourdes Carle in an Argentinian derby. Jasmin Ortenzi will square off Mayar Sherif.
Riera has been playing well in her two matches at the event so far. The 22 year old has beaten Nina Stojanovic, the winner of last week's WTA 125 LP Open in Chile, in the first round. Riera won that one on two sets and she took care of Makarova three in three sets in the round of 16. Riera is ranked at the 112th spot in the world. Her highest ever was at the third spot six months ago. Riera has won 36 and lost 24 matches across all tours in 2024.
Maria Lourdes Carle is ranked at the 81st position in the world. Carle’s best ranking ever was at the 71st spot back in may earlier this year. Carle is 24 years of age and she has won 41 and lost 27 matches across all tours this season. In the first round of the Argentina Open she got the better of Bosio in two sets. Carle beat De Reales in the second round in straight sets. The third seed reached the final last week at the LP Open but lost it.
Jasmin Ortrenzi received a wild card to the event and she has shown that it was well deservedly so. Yesterday Ortenzi took out the 8th seed Laura Pigossi in straight sets. Jasmin defeated Giovannini In the round of 32, also in two straight sets. The 23 year old from Argentina is ranked at the 275th spot in the world currently. Ortenzi has won 56 and lost 19 matches across all tours in 2024.
The 28 year old from Cairo, Egypt has won one title in her career. It could be two when we are done in Buenos Aires. The 4th seed at the event has gotten the better of Strakhova and Mladenovic in the first two rounds. Sherif is ranked at the 92nd spot in the world. She has won 31 and lost 22 matches across all tours in 2024. Sherif got to the semis at the LP Open last week. Before that she had three straight first round exits.
